How To Learn Lessons from My Epic Parent Fails

Posted on July 7, 2025September 9, 2025 by vicky

If there is one thing about parenting that I know for a fact, it is that nobody gets it right all of the time. In fact, sometimes we all fail epically! Yes, you see perfect families on Pinterest or Instagram, but that is not always true life parenting. Behind that photo are 57 other photos that it took to get that perfect one. Parenting is not about coordinated outfits and perfect days out. It is more about loving your child, sharing love, laughs and spending time together. Over the years, I’ve racked up my fair share of epic parenting fails! There have been moments that made me cringe, laugh, and sometimes want to hide under the duvet. But sharing epic parent fails means that other parents can relax and know they are doing perfectly, too.

The Time I Forgot Non-Uniform Day

Let’s start with a classic. There’s nothing quite like the horror of realising, at the primary school gates, that today is non-uniform day… and your child is the only one in full uniform. I’ll never forget Tilly’s face as she looked mortified and embarrassed. My heart sank, and I spent the rest of the morning feeling like the world’s worst mother. I have had to rush home and grab her different clothes so she can change at school.

Lesson learned: Organisation is important, but so is teaching resilience. Tilly survived (and even managed to laugh about it later), and I learned to double-check the school newsletter. More importantly, she learned that sometimes, life throws curveballs, and it’s okay to make mistakes. Nowadays, as she is at secondary school, she doesn’t bother about school’s own clothes days so much.

The Great Packed Lunch Disaster Parent Fails

Who knew that a simple ham sandwich could cause such drama? One morning, in a rush, I accidentally made Tilly’s lunch with food she hates. Another morning, I realised I didn’t have bread and had to buy a pre-packed sandwich on the way to school. And on one really embarrassing occasion, she took some leftovers from an afternoon tea at Valerie Patisserie, which were in a lunch box in the fridge. She took the wrong box and ate luxury cakes for lunch instead of a healthy lunch.

Lesson learned: Mistakes happen. The world doesn’t end if your child eats the wrong lunch for a day. In fact, it became a running family joke, and now, whenever someone’s feeling fussy about food, we remind them of “the lunchbox incidents.” Parenting fail? Maybe. Family bonding moment? Absolutely.

The Epic Bedtime Meltdown

As a parent, you know kids need a decent and possibly strict bedtime. This is to help them feel rested and ready for the following day at school. I have survived many bedtime meltdowns from when she was a baby, and we tried the cry-it-out method. When she was 5 or 6, I tried to start a new calm-down routine before bed. I figured some nice relaxing music, some lavender to calm and help her get to sleep, and then maybe a bedtime story from Audible on her Alexa. Tilly was having none of this. She said she didn’t like the lavender, and she also said that the music was boring. She was also full of questions about her story as she listened to it. It really wasn’t a calm-down routine at all!

Lesson learned: Sometimes, the best-laid plans go up in smoke, and that’s okay. If your child goes to bed a little late on the occasional night, thats okay. Now, I aim for “good enough” routines and embrace the chaos when things don’t go as planned. Tilly is 15 and has a 10 pm bedtime during the week. But at weekends, she is allowed to choose her own bedtime. Sometimes she goes to bed at 9.30 pm and sometimes she goes at 1 am!

The Social Media Slip-Up

Ah, the perils of parenting in the digital age! Like many proud mums, I’ve been guilty of oversharing a cute (embarrassing) photo or two. I shared a cute photo of Tilly snuggled up in bed one morning. I posted it on my public Instagram, and she made me remove it. I kept it on my private Facebook page as it is locked down. So it served as a lesson in digital boundaries and a very stern lecture from my teen daughter about consent and privacy. And you know what? She is completely right, and I was wrong.

Lesson learned: Respect your child’s autonomy. As our kids grow, their sense of self and privacy matters more than ever. Now, I always ask before posting, and sometimes, the answer is a firm “no.” It’s a small price to pay for trust and mutual respect.

The Homework Hiccup

One evening, in a flurry of helpfulness, I “helped” Kim with her music homework. By “helped,” I mean I did a lot of the whole thing, convinced it would save time and stress. A few days later, she came home with a ‘c’ and she was very disappointed! I promised never to ”help” my kids again with their homework, and I never did unless they came to me with questions and really needed the help.

Lesson learned: Letting kids struggle is part of the process. It’s tempting to swoop in and fix everything, but growth comes from trying, failing, and trying again. Now, I offer support (and snacks) but let Tilly take the lead. Even if it means a few wrong answers along the way. Recently, she didn’t revise enough for her mocks and didn’t do very well. But she learned from this, and I hope she will take her next mocks more seriously.

Embracing The Messiness Of Parent Fails

If there’s one thing these epic fails have taught me, it’s that parenting isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up, learning, and loving fiercely, even when things go hilariously wrong. Our children don’t need perfect parents, they need real ones. They need those parents who admit their mistakes, apologise when necessary, and keep trying.

So here’s to the forgotten non-uniform days, the mismatched lunches, and the bedtime battles. Here’s to laughing at ourselves, forgiving our slip-ups, and remembering that every fail is just another lesson in the grand adventure of family life.

Have you survived any epic parent fails? Share your story in the comments—let’s celebrate the messy, wonderful reality of raising kids together!
