Things to Do in Deal in the Winter
Winter in Deal has its own kind of magic. Yes, it’s cold. Yes, the wind can be aggressive (especially when it decides to slap you in the face as you walk along the seafront). But there’s something about this little seaside town in the colder months that feels peaceful, atmospheric, and full of simple pleasures. If you’re looking for things to do in Deal this winter that don’t need a big budget or a full day of planning, here are some of my favourite ideas to get you out of the house and enjoying the season. Take it from a person who lives here!
1. A Winter Walk Along Deal Seafront
Deal seafront in winter is a whole mood. The beach is quieter, the waves are louder, and the sky always seems to be doing something dramatic. Wrap up warm with a scarf, hat, gloves, the whole lot and take a slow wander from Deal Castle up towards the pier, or further on to the north end. The kids can collect pebbles and shells (they always find the “special” ones), and you can enjoy that crisp sea air that somehow feels like it’s clearing your entire brain. If you’re lucky, you might catch one of those pastel winter sunsets. It’s simple, it’s free, and it’s one of the best ways to enjoy Deal in the colder months.
2. Things To Do In Deal In The Winter Like Explore Deal Pier
Deal Pier is iconic, and in winter it has a lovely calmness to it. You can walk right to the end and watch the waves crash underneath, or just enjoy the view back towards the town. It’s also a great spot to take some photos of the seafront. If you’re visiting with kids, they’ll love watching the fishermen and spotting seabirds swooping around. And if you’re on your own, it’s a brilliant place to just stand for a moment and breathe. You might even see some sail boats in the channel if the weather is calm.
3. Wander Through Deal’s Conservation Area
Deal’s conservation area is one of the prettiest parts of town, and winter makes it feel even more atmospheric. The narrow streets, colourful houses, and old fisherman’s cottages look gorgeous with a bit of frost or a low winter sun. Take a slow wander through Middle Street and the surrounding lanes. Some parts are like stepping into a postcard. If you’re a fan of photography, this area is full of little details to capture. And if you’re visiting with kids, they’ll love exploring the twisty streets and spotting the quirky door knockers and brightly painted houses.
4. Visit Deal Castle
Deal Castle is one of those places that feels extra dramatic in winter. The dark stone, the circular walls, And the sea in the background. It all comes together to create a proper wintery vibe of Deal. While entry isn’t free, walking around the outside and exploring the grounds absolutely is. It’s a great spot for a short wander, and the kids can burn off some energy running around the moat. If you’re lucky enough to visit on a crisp, clear day, the views across the Channel are stunning.
5. Enjoy a Winter Stroll to Walmer
If you’re feeling energetic, the walk from Deal to Walmer is lovely in winter. The path is flat, easy, and right along the seafront. You can stop at Walmer Green, watch the waves, or just enjoy the peacefulness. It’s a great walk for families, especially if you’ve got scooters or bikes in tow. There are a few places to sit and have a hot drink along the seafront at Walmer Green too. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can carry on to Walmer Castle — even if you don’t go inside, the grounds and surrounding area are beautiful for a winter wander.
6. Browse Deal’s Independent Shops
Deal has some brilliant independent shops, and winter is the perfect time to explore them. From cosy bookshops to quirky gift stores, you can easily spend an hour or two browsing. It’s warm, it’s indoors, and it’s a great way to support local businesses. Even if you’re on a budget, window shopping is free and Deal’s shop windows are always beautifully decorated in winter. Because they are independent, you are always welcomed with open arms.
7. Visit the Saturday Market
Deal’s Saturday market runs all year round, and winter gives it a lovely bustling charm. You can wander through the stalls, pick up fresh fruit, veg and even bread. Browse the handmade crafts stall or just enjoy the atmosphere. It’s a great way to start a winter weekend, and the kids always love looking at the different stalls. If you’re lucky, you might even find some early festive treats or winter goodies.
8. Warm Up with a Hot Drink
Deal has some fantastic independent cafés as well as chain coffee shops. Nothing beats warming up with a hot chocolate or a proper cup of tea after a chilly walk. Whether you’re a fan of cosy corners or seaside views, there’s a café for every mood. It’s the perfect way to end a winter day out. And if you’re anything like me, it’s also the perfect excuse to grab a slice of cake.
9. Visit Walmer Castle
Visiting Walmer Castle in winter feels wonderfully peaceful. The gardens are quiet, the sea air is crisp, and the historic walls look even more dramatic under a pale winter sky. It’s a lovely place for a slow wander, wrapped up warm, enjoying the calm and beauty of the season. Walmer Castle has some beautiful rooms to look around inside the castle and there is a cafe to sit and have a drink or spot of lunch.
