Should I Get a Cleaner?
Some people like cleaning. These people are usually in the minority though, with most of us regarding cleaning as a chore, something to be avoided or a necessary evil.
What most people would agree on though is that a clean house is far nicer to live in than a dirty one.
With that in mind, the question, ‘Should I get a cleaner?’ may have entered your thoughts at times.
However, different people have different budgets and perhaps the luxury of a cleaner is simply out of reach. If you can afford a cleaner though but paying someone to clean your home seems too much of an indulgence or simply ‘wrong’, here are some things to consider.
Before I begin though, it’s worth mentioning that, if you own a business that operates from premises outside the home, you should hire the services of a commercial cleaning company but, for the purposes of this post, I’ll be talking about residential cleaners.
Cleaners are relatively inexpensive
Cleaners don’t cost much. It’s all relative, of course, but depending on whether you hire an independent cleaner or go via an agency, you can expect to pay between £10-£20 an hour.
That’s not a lot of money when you consider you wouldn’t be able to get a plumber, decorator or another contractor to come and work in your house for that hourly rate.
Another way of looking at it is that for the cost of a couple of bottles of wine or a takeaway, you could have a clean house. When you put it that way, a cleaner sounds very cheap!
A sense of shame
The thought of hiring a cleaner can sometimes cause people to feel embarrassed or ashamed. Ashamed perhaps because they think they’ll be perceived as being too lazy to clean their own homes or they may feel they’re being ‘classist’ by hiring someone to do what in the past has been thought of as a menial job.
There’s no need for these feelings of shame though. There are plenty of jobs around the home we’re happy to pay others to do such as decorating or gardening, and a cleaner is no different.
A cleaner frees you up for other things
If you’re thinking about getting a cleaner, it’s probably not because you’re sitting around all day watching television while dirt and dust pile up around you. It’s more likely because you’re busy with work and kids and you’ve got other things you’d rather do than clean the floors or wiping down the windowsills.
Hiring a cleaner means you can leave the cleaning to someone else while you get on doing other things that are more fun, productive or simply gives you the chance to catch your breath and have a cup of tea.
You’re giving employment and putting into the local economy
Why feel bad about getting a cleaner? You’re creating a job, allowing someone to earn money and you’re putting back into the local economy. All good things!
You get a clean house
The best thing about getting a cleaner is that you get a clean house. Even if you can only afford a cleaner for a couple of hours every couple of weeks, imagine coming home to a clean house that didn’t involve you getting the hoover or mop out yourself.
Should you get a cleaner?
The above are just a few reasons why you should get a cleaner if you hate cleaning and can afford to pay someone else to do it for you. We don’t think twice about getting help for other things around the house, so cleaning should be no different.
