In today’s tough economy many parents are looking towards the Christmas Season more as a reason for dread than celebration. Dwindling finances, increased unemployment and food prices, combined with non-stop rapid-fire media hype could overwhelm the best of us. Holiday shopping can be a nightmare. Involve kids in “gifts of self” by making handmade gifts for friends and family. Many of the ornaments which adorn my tree yearly were presents from my children. When time allows join in with community-sponsored events such as food drives. Even when money is tight, there will always be someone less fortunate than you. Volunteering a few hours with older children serves not only as a gift to the community. But it may give children a better understanding and appreciation for what they do have.
